Description
Up for auction is an 8-page fold out catalog supplement from February 1937 announcing the release of Vocalion records catalog #03416... also known as blues legend Robert Johnson's first release... "Kind Hearted Woman Blues" b/w "Terraplane Blues".
Both songs were recorded on November 23, 1936 in Room 414 of the Gunter Hotel in San Antonio, Texas. With "Kind Hearted Woman Blues" being the first song he recorded that day. This supplement was released just three months after those historic recordings.
The cover page presents the new Dance record releases with the Race (Blues) release presented on the lower half of the inside cover, Johnson's new release is listed there. The balance of the supplement lists available Dance, Instrumental, Old Time Singing, Old Time Playing and Race (Hot Dance and Blues) and Race (Sacred) records from the Vocalion catalog.
Other new Blues artists releases include Lil' Johnson, Memphis Minnie, Willie Mae, Hokum Boys, Black Boy Shine, and Bumble Bee Slim.
After internet research, I have found no other historical evidence of this specific supplement ever being sold. One of a kind?? This would be a great addition to any Blues, Robert Johnson or record collection.
Condition: Excellent. No creases or tears. The only flaw to speak of are pencil checkmarks and underlines on two of the pages... please see photos provided. Measures approx 5-1/2" long x 8-5/8" wide folded. 22" long x 8-5/8" unfolded.
