The Volunteer Jam was the annual Charlie Daniels Band concert first held on October 4, 1974 at the War Memorial Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee with band members Barry Barnes guitar, Taz Digregorio keyboards, Mark Fitzgerald bass, Gary Allen drums and Freddy Edwards drums. This was the beginning of a tradition.

The 2nd Volunteer Jam was released in the form of a movie. It was billed as the "First Southern Rock movie," even appearing in theaters across the US. The movie was re-released on DVD in 2007. Regulars at the Nashville Volunteer Jam concerts included the late George McCorkle, Jimmy Hall, Dickie Betts, Henry Paul, Dobie Gray, the late Toy Caldwell, drummer Gary Pacemaker, and others.

In 1979, Lynyrd Skynyrd reunited for the first time since the 1977 plane crash, with several members of the Charlie Daniels Band. CDB keyboardist Taz Digregorio took lead vocals on "Call Me The Breeze" followed by an extended instrumental version of "Free Bird." In 1987 Lynyrd Skynyrd returned to the stage for only the second time, also at the Volunteer Jam.

Each of the Nashville concerts featured a long list of special guests appearing onstage with Charlie and his band including Ted Nugent, The Allman Brothers Band, The Marshall Tucker Band, Billy Joel, Garth Brooks, Billy Ray Cyrus, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Tammy Wynette, Roy Acuff, Carl Perkins, Alabama, Don Henley, Barefoot Jerry and many more. Many of these concerts were broadcast live on the radio. The Volunteer Jam on nationwide TV included a live broadcast on the Jerry Lewis Telethon and a Dick Clark produced network special.

A "Volunteer Jam Tour" including the Charlie Daniels Band, the Outlaws and the Marshall Tucker Band toured the United States in 2007. The Nashville show scheduled for May 19, 2007 was cancelled, due to the closing of Nashville's Starwood Amphitheater

On April 11-12, 2008 Volunteer Jam was held at the Island Resort and Casino in Harris, Michigan. The concert featured Shooter Jennings and .38 Special.

On April 25, 2008 the Volunteer Jam tour visited Fayetteville, AR for the First Annual Dickson Street Music Festival, also featuring Shooter Jennings and .38 Special.

Volunteer Jam is also the name of a series of albums released by Charlie Daniels of performances from the late 1970s and early 1980s at the Volunteer Jam shows.

Come a pontida, anche qui da molti anni hanno luogo una serie di conventions e meeting epocali, barbari, scapestrati, orgiastici e sfrenati , a base di rodeo , piroette, capriole, stampede, sparatorie, scazzottate, gare di rutti, fiumi di birra e carne di vacca a sazietà, da mangiare, da gustare e da infilzare allo spiedo, sia con tagli di bistecche monumentali alte 4 dita che con quarti interi di manze sgallonate senza mutande e senza pudore, col sottofondo sonoro di un incessante frastuono a base esclusivamente di ruspante, fremente ed orgoglioso southern dixie rock, con la partecipazione degli ensemble e delle band di vaccari più scatenate, riottose ed irrequiete della confederazione sudista, e caratterizzato dalla consueta apoteosi finale, con tutti i partecipanti riuniti sul palco dell' auditorium di nashville ad intonare insieme in coro all' unisono la versione originale senza tagli e senza censure del popolare e tradizionale inno longobardo "senti che puzza scappano anche i cani"

Charlie Edward Daniels (Wilmington, 28 ottobre 1936) , fratello di latte del più invecchiato e liquoroso Jack,  è un compositore, violinista, chitarrista e cantante country statunitense.

È conosciuto principalmente per la sua canzone country The Devil Went Down to Georgia, che ha raggiunto la 1^ posizione nella classifica country e la 3^ nella Top 100 di Billboard, e per altre canzoni che ha scritto e interpretato. Daniels è attivo come cantante dai primi anni cinquanta.

Il suo primo album è datato 1971 ed è intitolato Charlie Daniels, metre il suo primo singolo, Robot Romp, risale al 1961.

Ha collaborato come turnista con molti artisti, tra cui i più noti sono Bob Dylan (nell'album New Morning) e Leonard Cohen (in Songs of Love and Hate).

Nel 2005 il chitarrista Steve Ouimette ha creato una cover della canzone The Devil Went Down to Georgia reinterpretata in chiave heavy metal per il videogioco Guitar Hero III.

A BRIEF HISTORY

In 1971, after playing on the road and picking on Nashville sessions for 15 years, Charlie Daniels decided to settle not far from Nashville, in the small town of Mt. Juliet, and form his own band.

With the Charlie Daniels Band's first hometown sellout concert, Charlie decided to celebrate the occasion by inviting a few friends to stop by and "do some jamming," little knowing a tradition was about to be launched.

The site was Nashville's 2,400 seat War Memorial Auditorium in October 1974, and among those who dropped in were members of The Marshall Tucker Band and The Allman Brothers Band. The concert turned out to be free-wheeling, rowdy, lengthy and a smashing success. So much so that it was repeated the next year...and the next...and the next, evolving into a musical event to rival all others in the United States.

Performers from this first "JAM," that came to be known as THE VOLUNTEER JAM, were included in the band's first album, FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN, and tapes of the event were aired on some 100 stations across the country.

The first year's 2,400 revelers joined 13,000 of their friends at Murfreesboro, Tennessee's Murphy Center in September of 1975 for another advance sellout, and more musical friends turned out to join the CDB and first year performers. The evening was documented in VOLUNTEER JAM, the first full-length Southern Rock motion picture, and taped broadcasts were aired on some 120 radio stations.

With VOLUNTEER JAM III, the event established a traditional site and month at Nashville's Municipal Auditorium in January of 1977. Another advance sellout included mail orders from as far as New York and California. The rowdy bash attained the stature of a civic event, inspiring mayoral and gubernatorial proclamations, and more than 250 radio stations aired two-hour tapes of the JAM via the King Biscuit Radio network.

In 1978, more parties, more guests, more proclamations and another advance sellout. Local television produced documentaries and nightly features, King Biscuit presented the JAM as one of its six annual 90-minute specials, and a live AM broadcast reached some 18 million listeners on the Eastern seaboard. Subsequently, Epic Records released a two-record set, VOLUNTEER JAM III and IV.

With VOLUNTEER JAM V, the CDB previewed material from the now double-platinum album, MILLION MILE REFLECTIONS, which included the international hit and Country Music Association "Single of the Year": The Devil Went Down To Georgia. JAM V spawned a PBS documentary, a special live broadcast over the VOLUNTEER JAM network to six Tennessee cities, and another Eastern seaboard live broadcast.

In 1980, more than 25 guest performers joined the CDB to celebrate the band's breakthrough to multi-platinum status with MILLION MILE REFLECTIONS. The event was broadcast live over the now traditional VOLUNTEER JAM network and recorded for later syndicated broadcasts over the 250-station King Biscuit network. Epic Records' VOLUNTEER JAM VI album documents the bash, which was also the subject of a syndicated television program.

Throughout the years, the JAM has drawn such luminaries as Willie Nelson, Alvin Lee, Jimmy Hall, Sea Level, Bonnie Bramlet, Papa John Creach, Crystal Gayle, Billy Joe Shaver, John Prine, Delbert McClinton, Rufus Thomas, Ted Nugent, Elvin Bishop, Mickey Gilley and Al Kooper, among a host of other top performers who lend their time and talent free to help the CDB celebrate another successful year.

Notes Charlie, "It began as, and will continue to remain the band's homecoming concert - a family reunion of sorts, and above all, an informal (but extremely well-organized) musical party."

LUCKY VII

For VOLUNTEER JAM VII, the Charlie Daniels Band really had something to celebrate. During a year considered generally rough in the record industry, the band turned in an award-winning performance. They had just completed their most successful 12 months in the band's history, as evidenced in national exposure, a standing-room-only Australian and European tour and both Grammy® and Country Music Association awards. In addition, their 1980 album, FULL MOON, and the FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN album, which contained portions of VOLUNTEER JAM I, were both certified platinum. And, when long-awaited tickets to JAM VII went on sale early in December in Nashville, they were completely sold out within two hours.

Not unlike any previous years, CDB fans gathered in cowboy hats and boots and tuned up their Rebel yells to roar in unison with Charlie, "Ain't it good to be alive and to be in Tennessee?" "Long live Southern Rock!" yells one cowboy with hair to his waist, causing another to counter with "The South's Gonna Do It Again!" - as fitting a tribute to CDB as there can be.

The JAM kicked in at 6 p.m. with the first bars of Southern Rock laid down by Grinderswitch. The eight-hour musical event of the year had begun.

Some 25 acts showed up for the occasion including Billy Joel, Roy Acuff, Delbert McClinton, Molly Hatchet, Ted Nugent, Bobby Bare, Crystal Gayle, Johnny Lee, The Marshall Tucker Band, Mickey Gilley, The Henry Paul Band, Shakin' Stevens from England, Jimmy Hall, Papa John Creach, The Jordanaires, John McEuen, Jerry Mills, McGuffey Lane, The Winters Brothers, Jimmy C. Newman, Dobie Gray, Kelly Harland and Ben Smathers and the Stoney Mountain Cloggers.

Others who followed the lead of the CDB attire tradition were Ted Nugent, an avid big game hunter, who showed up with a military camouflaged cowboy hat; Papa John Creach, who donned a white cowboy hat, and Roy Acuff, The King Of Country Music who has never been known to wear a hat on stage, who bought a black felt hat especially for the occasion in a local department store and added his own white feather band he'd been saving.

By 2 a.m., almost every type of music had been presented, from rockabilly by Billy Joel and Shakin' Stevens to thunderous rock sets by Molly Hatchet and Ted Nugent. Papa John Creach provided some fancy fiddlin', and Jimmy C. Newman provided a taste of Cajun music.

As the Tennessee Waltz signaled the call to arms for the CDB earlier in the evening, so did the tune signal the closing to another successful JAM.

JAM VII was carried live for eight hours via radio to seven stations in the South and was later replayed, in part, to scores of other stations across the country.

It was a special evening.

Special in that the evening was dedicated in memory of Tommy Caldwell, the late Marshall Tucker bass player and close friend to the CDB, who died in an auto accident April, 1980.

Special in that Roy Acuff took the occasion to present Charlie with a collection of sheet music containing all the songs he has sung on the GRAND OLE OPRY during his career. "I'm giving these songs to you as a keepsake. I want to be a part of your life, and these songs are my life."

And special in that it culminated the CDB's best year yet with friends and fans.

Nel panorama del dixie rock, dopo le ultime uscite dei Lynyrd Skynyrd (incisioni vecchie e nuove), 38 Special, Cooper Brothers, Nantuckets Fandango, non poteva mancare che lui, Charlie Daniels. È uscito, infatti, in questi giorni, un doppio live (Epic), registrato in due giganteschi concerti jam session svoltosi a Nashville, in cui oltre alla Charlie Daniels Band si sono esibiti gente del calibro di Willie Nelson, Wet Willie, Grinderswitch, Sea Level, Winter Brothers, Bonnie Bramlett, Toy Caldwell e Paul Riddle della Marshall Tucker, Papa John Creach e Mylon Le Fevre.

In quel di Nashville, questo panciuto cow-boy (leggi Charlie Daniels) è considerato un vero idolo; è un musicista amatissimo dai suoi colleghi e session man richiesto, soprattutto per il suo favoloso fiddle. Basti ricordare che compare in Nashville Skyline, Selfportrait e New Morning di Bob Dylan; in vari dischi di Leonard Cohen e in un disco di Ringo Starr (Beaucoup Of Blues), senza contare che ormai è di casa nella Marshall Tucker Band. La sua è una solida musica rock, condita da country e western; la sua band, finalmente stabile, è composta da Joel Taz Di Gregorio, tastierista coloratissimo che lo accompagna fin dal primo album; Tom Crain, eccellente seconda chitarra e buon vocalist; Charlie Hayward, bassista che ricordo in Laid Back di Gregg Allman e i due batteristi, Freddy Edwards e Don Murray, percussionisti ben affiatati e solidi.

La prima cosa che Charlie fa sul palco, è un ringraziamento a Dio per aver creato il Tennessee e il sud in generale. Passiamo comunque all'ascolto di questo disco, intitolato Volunteer Jam III & IV, la cui puntata precedente era il Volunteer Jam (Capricorn-O172), in cui c'era anche Dicky Betts e tutta la Marshall Tucker al completo. La side one è solamente Charlie Daniels Band, in momenti felicissimi e con musiche che danno l'idea del potenziale della band; Sweet Louisiana, Long Haired Country Boy e Trudy si susseguono senza attimi di respiro, con la ritmica incalzante e precisa. Conclude la side Cumberland Mountain Number Nine, scritta e cantata da Tom Crain: la sua chitarra e il fiddle di Charlie Daniels sono favolosi.

The South Gonna Do It canzone di Charlie, in cui si parla delle altre band sudiste, apre la seconda facciata: solido rock e buona musica da tutti i solchi. Subito dopo ecco i Sea Level, accompagnati da Charlie Daniels e Jimmy Hall (Wet Willie): Statesboro Blues ci riporta indietro nel tempo; Jimmy Nalls alla slide guitar ce la mette tutta, ma non può non farci rimpiangere Duane Allman; la voce di Chuck Leavell non ha niente a che vedere con quella di Gregg Allman (magari dei tempi migliori). Ecco subito dopo i Wet Willie in una bellissima versione di Street Corner Serenade dal loro ultimo album Manorism: la ritmica sincopata e il sax di Jimmy Hall sono dei veri gioielli; sarebbe ora di valorizzare di più questa band, che più o meno, è solo conosciuta per Keep On Smilin' quando invece ha fatto molti altri bei dischi. You And Me annuncia i Grinderswitch: ascoltati nell'altro doppio Hotels, Motels & Road Shows, mi erano sembrati un po’ sottotono, ma qui si riprendono alla grande; Steve Miller (non il chitarrista texano) alle tastiere e i duetti di chitarra fra Dru Lombar e Larry Howard sono veramente ottimi.

La terza side, forse la migliore, è tutta di Willie Nelson, questo meraviglioso musicista che tante emozioni ci ha regalato e che continua a darci; Will The Circle Be Unbroken è semplicemente favolosa. La quarta ed ultima side si apre con i Winters Brothers, altra band pupilla di Charlie Daniels, con una song molto bella e con tutti gli elementi della band in evidenza. Can't You See non ha bisogno di presentazioni: il fulcro è sempre lui, Toy Caldwell; questa versione, in jam session, è favolosa: la chitarra di Toy è inconfondibile e pur non essendo una gran voce, riesce veramente a colpirci. Con Tennessee Waltz, condotta da Charlie Daniels, si conclude il concerto; la canzone, che rutti conosciamo tramite Patti Page e il film Zabriskie Point, è resa in una versione molto più musicata di quella già detta; mi sembra che al fiddle ci sia Papa John Creach, definito il Folletto (e l'ubriacone) del rock. Spero che gli amanti di musica americana in genere non si facciano sfuggire l'occasione di avere questo bellissimo disco, che soddisferà veramente tutti.
