Swedish musician Anna returns after a five-year pause with her new full-length Iconoclasts, expanding the raw power of her voice and organ into grand, unruly terrain. The record grew from her stage work Atlas Song, a dance-theatre production that sold out Gothenburg's Opera; here she recompiles of those same materials a sweeping outsider rock statement, roping in no-pressure collaborators from Iggy Pop to Ethel Cain, yet lending her distinct shade to their preestablished sounds. The volcanic, teary-eyed force of 'The Whole Woman' meets shoegaze and Nordic balladry, while 'Stardust' fuses motor-powered, salvaged dub disco drumming and an atmosphere of controlled overwhelm, outlined in tempestuous synth and burgeoning brass.
