A landmark set of recordings from Haiti – originally captured on tape by avant filmmaker Maya Deren, and issued here in an album that went on to have a surprisingly huge impact since.  For folks in the postwar years, these recordings sounded remarkably earthy – and feel even more so at present – as Deren captured the sound and spirit of voodoo rituals in rural Haiti, in music that's very heavy on drumming, and also features lots of chanted vocals with percussions.
