Background -

The Barchet Quartet is a string quartet founded in 1952.

Reinhold Barchet was the first concertmaster of the Stuttgarter Kammerorchester from 1946 to 1952 and since 1955 has been the master class of his instrument at the Darmstadt Municipal Academy of Music . As a soloist, he regularly undertook concert tours at home and abroad. Will Beh worked as concertmaster of the Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra . The violist Hermann Hirschfelder was from 1939 to 1951 a member of the Strub Quartet, 1945-1948 first solo violist of the Berlin Philharmonic , from 1948 to 1951 professor at the Northwest German Music Academy Detmold . Helmut Reimann was a cellist for eight years in the Zernick Quartet. On the occasion of the complete recording of Mozart's 28 string quartets and 6 string quintets (with Emil Kessinger 2nd viola), the Barchet Quartet received the Grand Prix du Disque in 1959. Subsequently, the ensemble earned great success in Paris.

On April 18, 1961, the Stuttgarter Zeitung wrote about the Barchet Quartet:

"Considering that here are four concert masters who are accustomed to lead entire orchestras or groups, one is always amazed at the excellent chamber music skills that make them one of the most convincing ensembles of this species. Intelligence and spirited musicality are perfectly in balance. "

CONDITION Details:

The 3-LP outer box is in excellent overall condition. The VOX boxes were notoriously flimsy, but this box shows only mild shelf wear with NO splitting. The box is solid. The colors on the box are decent with some gold paint flaking/spotting on the cover (see pictures with this listing as they are of the actual item).

The set comes complete with a large format paper insert. These are usually lost over the years - it is rare to find the set with the paper insert.

The 3-LPs are in excellent plus condition. We found that the vinyl looked excellent on this old, vintage LP set. There are some light marks, mostly spider marks due to the hard paper inner sleeves, but there are no significant marks on the vinyl. The LPs retain some of the original gloss and sheen! They do have a bit of dust and perhaps a finger print or two on them so they should be cleaned before playing. There are NO serious spindle marks on the record labels either.

A Short Note About LP GRADING -

  • Mint = Only used for sealed items.
  • Near Mint = Virtually flawless in every way.
  • Near Mint Minus = Item has some minor imperfections, some audible.
  • Excellent = Item obviously played and enjoyed with some noise.
  • Very Good Plus = Many more imperfections which are noticeable and obtrusive.

For best results, always thoroughly clean your LPs before playing them.

LPs can be audiophile quality pressings (any collector of fine MFSL, half speeds, direct to discs, Japanese/UK pressings etc., can attest to the difference a quality pressing can make to an audio system).

Do not let this rarity slip by!
