Hello Children... Everywhere. Once upon a time there was a radio programme. It was called "CHILDREN'S FAVOURITES" and every Saturday morning an audience of 10 million tuned into the BBC Light Programme to listen to it. Beginning at five past nine, it ended at five to ten, just in time for "A Story, A Hymn and A Prayer". "CHILDREN'S FAVOURITES" or "CHILDREN'S CHOICE" as it was called initially — was the first national record request programme for children and it was presented by one of the BBC's stalwarts and guiding lights, Derek McCulloch — "Uncle Mac".
To those of us growing up in the late 1940s and early '50s the wireless provided entertainment on a scale similar to television today, perhaps more so. Portable radios, "trannies", cassette recorders and tape machines had not yet arrived. (I remember my delight at switching on a radio that didn't need to "warm up" but produced sound immediately). Televisions were in only a few homes. How many children in June 1953 "went next door" to watch the Coronation on their neighbours' television set, because it was the only one in the street? Many homes had wind-up gramophones or electric record players — some were lucky enough to have "radiograms" — but no home could hope to amass a record collection to match the wealth of music broadcast on the wireless.
For most, it was the only way in which to hear a particular piece of music, by asking for it to be played on the air. To hear the music was just as important as hearing your name mentioned. With the record request programme firmly established (Record Time, Family Favourites and, in 1946, Housewives Choice) it is suprising, given the BBC's early commitment to programmes for children, that it was not until 1952 that young listeners were allocated their own request spot. Christmas Day 1952 was the first ever "Children's Choice". Its signature tune was Edward White's "Puffin Billy" and the $ programme was an immediate success. Included in that first edition were several numbers which were to remain in the repertoire, as it were, for years to come: "Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer", 'The Little White Duck", Teddy Bears' Picnic" and "Me and My Teddy Bear". The first presenter was not Uncle Mac but the popular singer Donald Peers, who'd been hosting "Housewive's Choice" the previous week. That was the pattern for the next year — the "Housewive's Choice" presenter would stay on an extra day to play the kiddies' choice; indeed, the famous Housewives' Choice signature tune, "In A Party Mood" was frequently substituted for "Puffin Billy".
It was not until January 1954 that "Childrens Choice" finally became "Children's Favourites", acquiring its own regular presenter in the person of Derek McCulloch. He was by no means the only presenter. Over the years, such luminaries as Michael Miles, Victor Silvester, David Jacobs, the veteran Broadcaster Rex Palmer (Uncle Rex') and Peter Brough with Archie Andrews and Max Bygraves were among those who took a turn at the turntable. But it was McCulloch's personality, his voice and manner that made the programme what it was. He had been, after all, rather more than a mere "record spinner". Derek Ivor Breashur McCulloch, was born in Plymouth in 1897 and joined the BBC as an announcer in 1926. He had risen to become Director of Children's Programmes by 1938 but had in fact resigned by the time he came to present "Children's Favourites" to become Children's Editor of the "News Chronicle".
He was, though, best known to millions as the man behind one of radio's most enduring creations, the bleating voice of "Larry The Lamb" in the hugely popular "Toytown". What many did not know was of the immense physical discomfort he suffered for most of his life. Aged only 17 he had enlisted as a private soldier in the Public Schools Battalion and had been left for dead after an incident during the battle of Somme, a shoot — out with a German stretcher-bearer. He barely managed to crawl back to his lines and survive. In 1938 further misfortune befell him when, after a road accident in Surrey, he lost his left leg. In all, McCulloch underwent nearly 60 operations and during many broadcasts he was in great pain.
While adults admired his courage and fortitude, children showed their affection by writing in their thousands during his frequent spells in hospital and convalescing. If (as was said) he was "somewhat testy", "rather unbending", having" rigid opinions", it certainly did not show in his warm and friendly broadcasting manner. That Uncle Mac had a real love and understanding of children (he had two daughters of his own) and that his avuncular no-nonsense approach was pitched so accurately was evident by the number of requests made...
