Description
This auction is for a very rare 12" 78rpm disc on the German wartime Siemens label (part of the Polydor catalogue output) of Vasa Prihoda (1899 - 1960, noted Czech virtuoso widely reckoned to be the equal of Heifetz in technical matters), playing Sarasate's "Jota Navarra" and Tchaikowsky's "Romance", with Michael Raucheisen at the piano. It has a Mechanical Copyright Date stamped of 1942, catalogue number 68045, matrices 1761 3/4 GS9 and 1762 1/2 GS9.
The performances are absolutely superb: the Sarasate is thrilling and quite astounding technically, the Tchaikowsky achingly beautiful - this was always one of my favourite Prihoda discs, recorded in quite a lush acoustic, his tone never sounded finer, a really beautiful piece of violin playing! Now being sold as part of my on-going clear-out for space reasons.
Condition:
Overall both sides are very good, no wear, but with light surface marks/rubs, however a suitable modern lightweight electrical pickup with the correct sized stylus (0.028") passes beneath them with the occasional light 'tick', no major scratches or digs. However, please note that there is a completely stable edge-chip on the Tchaikowsky side only, which does not affect playing: it stops before the grooves start and has not increased in size in the 20-odd years I've had this disc. I've included a close-up pic so you can see for yourself - you can play the entire side, there's no loss of musical content, it just means you can't drop the stylus into the run-in groove. It isn't present on the Sarasate side at all.
Record will be supplied in stiff card 'collector' cover, with titles, matrix and catalogue nos. written on it.

A note re. 78rpm grading: This record has been played on a Garrard 401 transcription turntable, with an SME 3009 Series II lightweight pickup, through a modern electrical system, as well as being graded visually.
