ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This handsome and rare 3 LP box set – a superb collector’s copy – from Valois (CMB 14, French pressing, purple/silver label, stereo, full-size 12-page booklet included) features Sándor Végh’s probing and deeply felt readings of Johann Sebastian Bach's Partitas and Partitas for Solo Violin BWV 1001-1006 – landmarks in the Bach discography and among the supreme statements on record of these remarkable masterpieces for unaccompanied violin.
Included then are the following works:
Sonata No. 1 for Solo Violin in G minor BWV 1001
Partita No. 1 for Solo Violin in B minor BWV 1002
Sonata No. 2 for Solo Violin in A minor BWV 1003
Partita No. 2 for Solo Violin in D minor BWV 1004
Sonata No. 3 for Solo Violin in C Major BWV 1005
Partita No. 3 for Solo Violin in E Major BWV 1006
Vegh’s set was recorded “live” at l’Oratoire Sainte-Catherine à Cervo on 19 November and 2 December 1970 during the Festival de Musique de Chambre de Cervo (producer: Georges Kisselhoff). The sound is truly superb, well capturing Vegh's distinctive sound, the violin not spolit nor too closely balanced, consistent throughout.
Vegh imbues these works with a supreme sense of architecture and a penetrating imagination. Even if you have another favorite set, there are so many felicitous touches and moments of insight throughout Vergh's cycle that it stands as one of the most highly individual accounts ever recorded – a landmark in these works' discographies.
Included is a full-size 12-page booklet with extensive notes on the music by the distinguished musicologist and author Harry Halbreich. Also included is a striking photo of Vegh, the violin he used on this occasion (the 1724 “Paganini” Stradivarius) and an eloquent introduction by the production head Michel Bernstein. Incidentally, the strking cover design/typography on the box front was executed by Robert Planet.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the box is EXCELLENT+. There is some very slight shelfwear, more so at the corners, but that is all. There are no corner breaks, seamsplits, or owners' markings and the box remains solid, bright, and highly attractive – overall, this rates as a very fine collector's copy, quite close to near-mint.
The condition of the full-size 12-page booklet is near-MINT – again, a very fine collector’s copy.
The condition of the 3 LPs is near-MINT throughout. I believe these to be unplayed copies, but I cannot guarantee that. There are no scratches, the surfaces are glossy and look imaculate. Nevertheless, to err on the safe side, I am grading them as NM. If you must have absolutely flawless surfaces, then please do not buy this set. Overall, these rate as truly fine collector's copies.
