Velvet Underground with Lou Reed Live 1969 '74 Mercury 2 LP Gatefold VG-/VG+
Cover: VG-.Solid all round but many issues that must be noted. Ringwear front and back sleeves, small "CK 163" written in ink on artwork on front cover, some scuffing on title spine, less so on top and bottom spines. Several creases throughout the cover. Corners here as a rule have fraying/ paper loss. Gatefold is actually the strongest asset of the whole cover design, not many faults there to list.
Discs Visual: original '74 red labels.
Side A VG+. Under bright light,glossy.4-5 main hairline scratches-none feelable.Also,15 or so very faint scratches, hard to spot. Marks and smudge-y marks on outer rim dead wax area.
Side B Strong VG+. Under bright light, glossy. 10 or so very faint hairlines (hard to spot).Multiple marks and smudge-y marks on outer rim/dead wax area.
Side C Strong VG. Under bright light, glossy. 2-3 faint hairlines-none feelable. One of them is about 4 inches long and runs through the side-opener "Ocean". Multiple marks and smudges on outer rim/dead wax area. Also, slight rub marks in a small area at the beginning of the previously mentioned "Ocean". Very faint sleeve removal impressions.
Side D VG. Under bright light. glossy. Multiple marks on dead wax area/outer edge area.6-7 hairline scratches-none feelable. Rub marks area about 1.25 inches long through the opener ("Some Kinda Love") and just at the beginning of the next cut (Over You").Sleeve removal impressions.
All sides contain 5-6 borderline 'non-fill" vinyl spots. Tiny dots in the vinyl playing surface which aren't bumps and probably wouldn't be a long lasting noise if they even produced one.
Audio
Side A VG+. Intermittent low-level crackle before the audio track begins and continues during the first portion of Lou's long spoken introduction, stopping right around his query: "Do you people have a curfew or anything like that?" In between the 1st ("Waiting For The Man") and 2nd cuts ("Lisa Says"),the noise level is 2 out of 10 (10 being the worst). In between the 2nd and 3rd ("What Goes On"),it has gone down to 1.5 out of 10 and in between the 3rd and 4th/final ("Sweet Jane")track ,it stands at 0.5 out of 10.
Side B VG- at very beginning only, remaining 99% is VG++.
At the first needledrop at the lead-in groove area, there is significant crackle- a noise level of 5 out of 10 ( 10 being the worst)which continues (although mostly cancelled out because of the song's volume level) through the intro of the side -opener ("We're Gonna Have A Real Good Time Together").At that selection's conclusion, the noise level has died down to 0.5 out of 10 where it remains for the rest of the side.
Side C VG- at very beginning only/VG++ for the remaining 99%.
Again, crackle (about a 4 out of 10 noise level) at the opening dead wax area. Intermittent crackle which remains so for the first 20 seconds of the opener's ("Ocean") fade in. At that point, it starts to weaken for the next 10 seconds until it is largely gone. This results in a noise level of 1 out of 10 (10 being the worst). In between that cut and the 2nd ("Pale Blue Eyes") it has dropped down to 0.75 out of 10.At the conclusion of that cut and the beginning of the side closer ("Heroin") it stands at 0.5 out of 10.
Side D VG- at beginning only/VG++ for remaining 99%.
At first needledrop beginning area, there is low-level crackle before audio track begins. This quickly quietens down to just a tick with each revolution and then quickly followed up with a more prominent "pop with each revolution" state finally resulting in a skip around the time of Lou's quip "My brother Doug on bass". From there, it goes back to mostly quiet backgrounds for the rest of the side with a noise level ranging from 1.5 out of 10 down to 0.5 out of 10.
This is all determined with the volume way up for testing. So-to recap, I'd say the 4 sides overall are 95% trouble-free(good quiet backgrounds for playback),but those areas making up the troubled 5% are significant in volume but very short-lived.
