VELVET UNDERGROUND 1ST PRESS STEREO V6-5008 VERVE 1967 "2ND STATE" VERSION WITH TORSO DECAL ON REVERSE. YOU WILL BE THE THIRD OWNER!
Time to part with my best record. Starting a classic car restoration, and need funds. I bought this album from the original owner. The day that he brought it home as a young lad he couldn't resist peeking under that banana :( Once it started to tear he quickly pressed it back(pictured), but the complete banana is all there. The sleeve and vinyl I would conservatively grade at vg to vg+ vinyl is nice, no warp, deep glossy black. light surface scuffs here and there but nothing you can feel running a finger over, no deep scratches that would compromise sound quality. Sleeve has normal surface rub/ring wear from storage, the white has the common tanning around border, the only issue would be that one pesky seam split measures about 3" at the top of opening side.(pictured)No water damage/stains, No paper peel, No tape.No writing. In overall great shape for age!
A brief-brief history on this album's first pressing 3 different versions .....
The Original Art on the reverse of the album sleeve has the photo of the band with a superimposed image of an actor named Eric Emerson above the band, this is called the "Torso cover"(or 1st state) Eric Emerson threatened to sue the band if they didn't pay him royalties for using his image. So the big brains over at the record company thought instead of trashing all the sleeves they had already printed, they would slap a big black sticker over Eric's image, then distribute the rest of the stock.( this is known as "2nd state or torso sticker") The third and the most common is the final version, where Eric Emerson is completely airbrushed out of the original photograph.( 3rd state) The version I'm parting with is the 2nd state with the black sticker on back, which to be totally honest is the version I've seen the least in circulation. I've been crate digging for many moons and this is only the second one I've ever come across in person, and they are usually beat to hell. I have played this record one time, the day I acquired it, (you kinda have to!) then safely kept in storage after that. Today is the second time I have ever pulled the record out of its sleeve, to take the photos.
