Velvets

Rare Original UK EP released in 1961 on the Plum & Silver top London Label with round centre press. Cat: RE-U 1297. This EP is in MONO.

Over the next few weeks I will be offering a wonderful selection of rare mostly UK late 50's & 60's 1st pressing LP's and EP's. Obtained from and English gentleman who originally lived in Manchester and saw many of the great acts of the day in their prime. His enthusiasm and knowledge of this period of music and the amount of artists he saw was quite staggering and included Rolling Stones, Beatles, Eric Burdon & Animals, Manfred Mann, Gerry & The Pacemakers, Small Faces, Kinks, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Roy Orbison, Sam Cooke, this list went on and on!  A fastidious collector his vinyl overall has been kept in fantastic condition especially considering some of the items are over 50 years old!  Many of the items would have been bought within weeks of their original release dates. We offer combined postage on all items purchased. Hopefully I will have the opportunity to list his 45's in the near future. Over 300 wonderful items from the same period.

The Odessa, TX-based Velvets are best remembered for their violin-enriched 1961 Top 40 hit "Tonight (Could Be the Night)," during which the group chanted "doo-wop" behind lead singer Virgil Johnson. It was one of the first uses of the phrase in a song (the Turbans' use of the phrase on the 1955 "When You Dance" predates it by a few years). Johnson was a high school English teacher who recruited four of his students -- Clarence Rigsby (lead tenor), Robert Thursby (tenor), William Solomon (baritone), and Mark Prince (bass)  to form the Velvets in 1960. They were soon spotted by Roy Orbison, who helped get them signed to the Nashville-based Monument label (he later cut "Lana" a song of theirs, while at the label).

Tracks: That lucky old sun/ Time and again/ Tonight (could be the night)/ Spring fever.

Record has a few light scuff marks that produce a few light crackles throughout mostly only noticeable between tracks. Record is in Excellent condition. Cover has light ring wear and a few light marks on back and a tiny tear on centre right front of cover. Cover is in VG++ condition.
