VINYL SOUND QUALITY CODES [at the end of track times above] – graded on what it sounds like – not what it looks like ! Vinyl may not be 100% central on spindle or 100% flat & may have light surface marks or even small pressing blemishes. Sound quality grading of individual tracks starts with the sound element of the General Condition Code as listed below – followed by a Minus Code to try to describe exactly what you can expect to hear on a 'modern' stereo system. For example 'M' sounds near perfect [for the standard at the time of recording – see notes about reissues below]. Track volume covers most of the ever present background [hiss and ticks] of vinyl passing under stylus.
Background may still be audible between tracks and on low volume parts of tracks and on Fade-In / Fade-Out.
Minus Codes – Q=Quieter parts of track have occasional slightly louder background clicks or noise (less than 10% average track volume).
QFI / QFO same, but only on Fade-In (or low volume start of track) / Fade-Out. QC / QCFI / QCFO = Background click on gap within track / Fade-In / Fade-Out.
QK=quiet click (less than half average track volume). PQK=occasional quiet clicks (6-12). QKLY=quietly crackly / frequent quiet clicks.
K=click / light click (within average track volume). PK=occasional clicks (6-12). KLY=crackly / frequent clicks. BK=big click [louder than average track volume].
3K=3 isolated clicks in track. KKK=3 clicks close together. Kx3=click for 3 revolutions. Kx13sec=click each revolution for 13 seconds – (scratch).
RIK=Run-In click(s). RON=Run-Out Noisy. [Noted within 2 seconds before / 1 second after 'clean' track – but not when SFI / EFO is noted.]
SFI=Start Fade-In / first few seconds. EFO=End Fade-Out / last few seconds. LFO=Long Fade-Out. SW=Swish, or similar background noise.

NEW (no codes) = Top Grading – Item is Brand New [Mint] – Vinyl unmarked – No background audible on tracks – Labels & Sleeve Brand New.
M = MINT MINUS [near new] – Vinyl will have a few very light surface marks but sounds near perfect for the time of recording / manufacture. Occasional background (Fade-In,Fade-Out & Quiet parts) is forgiven. [Maximum of two clicks [K] & several quiet clicks [QK] allowed per side before downgrading to 'X'] Labels near new. Sleeve near new but with impression marks of vinyl & label rings & possibly very lightly creased. 'SS' = Shop display Sleeve near new without rihg impressions – but with light spine creases.
Display sleeves were stored separately from insides & may not be in matching condition – see details.
X = Excellent – Vinyl probably sounds almost as good as the day it was made but with slightly more noticeable background throughout than 'M'. Used vinyl will show signs of being played more often, usually with several light surface marks, light crackle on Run-In & Run-Out, with more quiet clicks & maybe an occasional Hint Of Distortion=HOD.
[A short light scratch per side or several separate clicks [K] per track allowed before downgrading to 'V']
Labels slightly damaged, worn or with sticker mark or small tag. Sleeve as 'M' but may also have light edge wear and / or stronger creases.
V = Very good – exactly that – somewhere between 'X' & 'G' [Demoted 'N' vinyl / label / sleeve will have problem detailed in description.] Used vinyl will usually have many light surface marks & light crackle throughout with multiple quiet clicks & several clicks per track &/or slight deterioration in sound quality through use – Labels more worn – torn, stickered or tagged. Sleeves as X but wth surface tears on edges &/or rings – possibly heavy creases.
G = Good – vinyl still plays through OK, but multiple and deeper surface marks cause surface noise, crackle, & louder clicks that compete with average track volume – sounding even worse on fade-in, fade-out & quiet parts. Usually some sound deterioration from much use is also obvious. Probably OK for use on more rugged disco type set up – not recommended for your best expensive stylus ! – Labels in poor condition. Sleeves basically sound but with large surface tears usually on rings – where sleeves have become ‘welded’ together in storage and print layers have come away from card underneath when separated.
F = Fair [for the more genteel collector – apparently] – for the rest of you it's the word you first thought of & vinyl is offered purely as a Filler. [F grade for any track means it is best to avoid playing it – details in description]. Labels – Floated off in flooded storage. Sleeve beyond salvage – see description.
D = Damaged label / sleeve. DR = Damaged Reinforced sleeve – with internal glued plain paper.
KJ = Inkjet print of sleeve shown in picture or one sided chickaboom shop display bag – see note above.

MONO original pressings from 50’s & 60’s were designed to be played by larger tipped needle / stylus at heavier tracking weights on mono equipment of the time – and will generally sound better played that way now. [Grading is done on stereo system.]
REISSUES general condition code refers to current vinyl – not the original source quality. Sound Quality code will have a second code or comment [in brackets] after the first if the quality of the source is less than it should be for the recording date. Some source material – especially for 1950's reissues into the pre-digital early 1980's were often dubbed from original 78's / 45's or sourced from raw & basic old recording tapes or acetates. Most 70’s & 80’s reissues have been pressed on stereo equipment in ‘twin mono’ and so should be played with stereo sylus.
PICTURE DISC & Foil Sandwich disc reproduction quality is not always as good as conventional solid vinyl. The thin clear outside layers usually have slightly more background crackle and any uneven content within the vinyl layers can cause light thumps – especially die cut internal shapes.
CHICK-A-BOOM shop price stickers were removable when they were stuck on 25-35 years ago, but will probably damage sleeve surface now. Any other stickers are presumed permanent.
RADIO RECORD LIBRARY 1950’s & 1960’s items often had ‘playing date cards’ stuck to the front covers with clear tape which has dried out, fallen off & left brown remains over the years. Tape was also used for repairs – this has been renewed before listing. Tape has also been used to stop old Clarifoil from peeling any further. Many of these items also have Library Stamp & Track timings written on the back. Most of them also appear to have had inner sleeve replacements at some time [Early 1960’s ?] – to a standard pattern poly-lined type.
