Description
This acetate is from late 1966, when Gandalf Publishing Company still had its office in the Dime Building in downtown Detroit. That information is hand printed on the label.
But the label's true provenance is blacked out. Held just so in the light, it reads WILD INDIGO MUSIC, a/g 850 seventh ave, New York 10019 212-ju65124. "a/g": that would be Arthur Gorson, agent and manager of Eric Andersen, David Blue and others.
And the source of the recordings on the acetate is the "Arthur Gorson Demo Tape", which Chuck and Joni Mitchell made and sent to New York, to entice Gorson to manage them. The tape is monophonic, 7.5ips, half-track, good analog audio.
This acetate has minimal surface noise, good fidelity, and contains four of Joni's songs from that Gorson demo tape:
1. Daisy Summer Piper
2. Play Little David (This performance is shorter (2:07) and edgier than the CBC Chansons performance (2:50), and David Rae is absent)
3. The Circle Game (with Chuck's harmonies and backup guitar, and Joni singing a wordless wilding descant over the lyrics)
4. Day After Day
"Acetates” were pressed by publishing companies for distribution to artists and/or recording companies only, not for public distribution. They play on a standard turntable but are not as durable as a vinyl LP. This acetate has some (typical) surface noise and should be handled carefully. The seller recommends that the buyer make a CD copy to play rather than playing this acetate over and over.
