PLEASE CONSIDER THAT IN THESE EBAY AUCTIONS I USE A STRICT RECORD COLLECTOR MAGAZINE GRADING SYSTEM THAT CAN'T DISAPPOINT ANYONE BUT THIS DOESN'T MEAN THAT ,FOR EXAMPLE, A VG+ COVER OR A VG+ VINYL IT'S EQUIVALENT TO "BAD CONDITIONS" BUT SIMPLY THAT MY GRADE IT'S STRICT AND PROBABLY EQUIVALENT TO AN EX OF SOMEONE ELSE WITH NOT A SO STRICT GRADE. I HAVE SOLD IN THESE AUCTIONS EX- RECORDS THAT WERE SURELLY M- COPIES BUT I PREFERE TO BE STRICT TO AVOID ANY DISAPPOINTEMENT BECAUSE I TAKE GREAT CARE OF MY REPUTATION.
Record Collector Magazine Grading System MINT The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.
EXCELLENT The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.
VERY GOOD The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.
GOOD The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.
FAIR The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and/or defaced.
POOR The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.
BAD The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection-filler.
graded VG++/EX- for a strict Record Collector magazine grading system
label: The red label WRS017 does have just 2 spindle marks on side one and no other defect.
cover: The cover it's matt with flipback structure always much more seducing especially in 1972. There's a very very starting of partial ring so EX- for my very strict grading.
vinyl: The vinyl it's EX- too because of 1 scuff mark on one side that does not play at all and nothing else.
review: this is what another auctioner wrote about this group: SAGA were a folk band local to Derby in the early 1970's and sold this limited edition LP at their pub gigs. They were not electric but they used to be well-miked up and had an old chapel harmonium that they dragged on stage that added to the pretty beefy sound. This LP was very well recorded in 1972 by the independent and excellent Westwood Recordings in Mid-Wales with plenty of volume on the mikes and with very good use of tambourine and rolling side-drum and that harmonium. A bass guitar even cuts in on "Traditional Medley" similar to the way that Tich Richardson used the bass in Boys of the Lough. They were thus an inventive band who wrote some of their own songs and had their own arrangements of all the standard favourites of the time that you would hear on this LP - e.g. "The Lark in the Morning"; Arthur McBride; Adieu Sweet Nancy. There are also instrumentals with fiddle, mandolin, guitars, percussion and occasionally bass guitar. - They do standard sets - "My love She's but a Lassie Yet/ Mairie's Wedding etc" and some of their own - Peartree Jig and the Scarecrow - Peartree at the time being a down-at-heel inner-city part of Derby that became shabby/chic. There are also 3 of their own songs - I'm not too keen on these but these are redeemed by two excellent arrangements of contemporary folk-idiom songs - "The Wizard of Alderley Edge" (Pete Coe) and "The Yarmouth Castle" (Gordon Lightfoot). The LP write-up only mentions the band members by first names in passing over the recording details - there is no performers' check list except where there is a surname credit to a song or tune. I like this - true anti-celeb folkies! but sadly this means that I can't easily find out happened to them or whether they became professional and are still around today. I hope so because they were excellent players. The fiddle/mandolin man (John Squire?) was very accomplished for the local English folk scene the early 1970s as were the rest of the musicians and though they would have had a way to go to match the likes of Carthy & Swarbrick (by whose style they were obviously influenced but not enslaved), this LP stands the quality test of time for most of the material, arrangements, instrumental skills and the recording. Obviously the name is a bit of a problem, having been appropriated since that tome by the Charity set up for the over 50s! However, it was quite a good name for such a band at the time and I guess the band members now would be well old enough for SAGA membership!!" I can only add that this is a very rare lp so... don't miss!
