     I guess you'd call this a short run rather than a limited edition, but the first release on the "Half-Blind's Choice" label was the five hundred copies of this album, Steve Mann's 1967 concert at the Ash Grove in Los Angeles. It was recorded not long before his musical gifts fell under the shadow of his long battle with schizophrenia. But here he's at the top of his form, and the studio engineer did his utmost to optimize the quality of the original mono half-track recording taken through the Ash Grove house P.A.

     Side One shows only light signs of use, and a play test gave good bright sound, with a bit of tape hiss from the relatively low-fi 1/4 inch tape source. Side Two looks pretty alarming at first glance-- a cluster of visible scratches mar the otherwise fairly fresh-looking surface; this being a souvenir of the LA quake of '94, when the record was sitting on the turntable, not being played. The tone arm wasn't clipped down and did a little seismograph dance... Happily, the scratches didn't cause any skipping or sticking when I played it, though you'll hear a click or crackle as the stylus crosses the affected area. Actually it kind of fits in with the music. It's most noticeable during "Titanic", then gets progressively less through each cut. 

      It's not perfect, but it's very playable, and very rare.
