"From Moscow's Central Red Army Club in 1928 emerged a singing group of unusual effectiveness. Called the Choir of the Red Army of the U.S.S.R...its main function and purpose was to follow the army of the Soviet wherever duty called and keep high the soldiers' morale.
"In this capacity the Choir was more than successful. Beyond its Official activities it became famous throughout Russia and Europe for the power, spirit, and quality of its interpretations not only of martial music, but of folk-music and operatic favorites. In 1936, the Choir was given the Order of the Red Banner, one of the highest honors bestowed by the Soviet Government.
