Viola Wills 45 The First Time Rare Northern Soul 1969

-Viola Wills' only release for the tiny " A Bem Sole " record label from 1969. We purchased the complete inventory of over 20,000 45's from Frank's Record Shop in Vancouver B.C. when they decided to close down their store back in 1989. Included in that group in new, unplayed condition were many releases of Vancouver, Victoria, Canadian, U.K. and U.S.A. punk, funk, soul, R&B, rock, pop and garage bands. This is one of them.

-Viola Wills has had brushes with success, but hasn't had a mainstream U.S. hit to date. A pre-stardom Barry White began using singer Viola Wills as a session vocalist on sides that he produced for Bob Keene's Bronco / Mustang labels. In the mid 1960's, Keane wanted to expand into soul music. In 1965, A&R director Barry White signed Wills to Bronco as a solo artist. She recorded several soul sides for the label; all failed to chart. In 1969 she recorded two soul sides " The First Time" / " You've Got My Blessings " for the A Bem Sole label based in Los Angeles that also failed to hit.In 1974 she replaced back-uo vocalist Claudia Linnear on Joe Cocker's European tour. While in the U.K., Willis recorded for Goodear. Three years later she signed with Arista Records. In 1979, while signed to the Ariola/Hansa label, Wills enjoyed her biggest hit with a disco version of Patience and Prudence's 1956 hit "Gonna Get Along Without You Now". Recording in an up-tempo shake your groove  thing style, Wills scored again with the dancefloor hits "If You Could Read My Mind" and " Up On The Roof".

-' The First Time ' is a great soul recording, Viola sings it with Hi-NRG from beginning to end !

-Very few of the ' A Bem Sole ' records # 1001 were pressed .' This elusive 45 rpm release   appears on many a soul collector's ' Want List'.
