When originally released, Fantasia was not only a milestone in the art of animation, but a breakthrough in motion picture sound. Never before had a film used a multi-channel soundtrack to surround its audience with true stereo separation. The combination of sight and sound was overwhelming.

"But technology has progressed so far since Fantasia's initial release as the first stereophonic motion picture that the sound no longer matched the extraordinary visuals," according to Ron Miller, president of Walt Disney Productions. In an effort to recreate the same state-of-the-art level of excitement that thrilled audiences in 1940, Fantasia has been rerecorded in digital sound and released to theaters in Dolby Stereo.

Conducting the 121-piece symphony orchestra and 50-voice choir for the new soundtrack was Irwin Kostal, a two-time Academy Award-winner whose credits include West Side Story, The Sound of Music, and Mary Poppins. Kostal personally chose the musicians, including concertmeisters and star performers from the finest symphony orchestras in the world. According to Kostal, Fantasia is still the most effective blending of sound and picture in a picture in a theatrical motion picture.
