Funk band War were formed in 1969 when the disillusioned singer of rock band The Animals, Eric Burdon, met a band called Nightshift in Los Angeles and suggested a united project. The debut album Eric Burdon Declares "War" contained "Spill The Wine", an international hit that made their name. But Burdon left the band shortly after second album The Black Man's Burdon (1970), due to exhaustion from touring. The rest of the band carried on without him. A self-titled album didn't succeed, but All Day Music (1971) did - it included two minor hits and sold over a million copies. The World Is A Ghetto (1972) did even better, topping the album chart and selling three million copies. Deliver The World (1973) sold another two million, but wasn't so well received by critics. War got back into the critics' good books with Why Can't We Be Friends? (1975), which included another hit in the title track, and "Le Freak". The group's popularity began to decline afterwards as their output slowed and the disco craze sidelined gritty funk. In the 80s and 90s, hip-hop artists such as Beastie Boys, De La Soul and Gangstarr sampled many of their songs, introducing War to a new generation of fans. A version of War continues to tour today.

DELIVER THE WORD - ORIGINAL RELEASE & LABEL OUT OF PRINT FOR DECADES ( has a cutout in jacket but in it's original sealed condition - Established as bona fide hit makers thanks to the success of the albums All Day Music and The World Is a Ghetto, the Los Angeles-based seven-man group War aimed for a hat trick with the 1973 album Deliver the Word. Less mainstream in its approach than its chart-topping predecessors, the seven-cut set boasted just one hit in the form of the groove-flavored "Gypsy Man," a top 10 pop and R&B single in the summer of '73. Exploring Latin rhythms, funk, jazz, and rock, Deliver the Word stretched musical boundaries. "In Your Eyes" was a lengthy opus that came complete with orgasmic sighs, an opportunity for the skillful musicians to stretch out. One of the true standouts was the catchy "Me and Baby Brother," which should have been a much bigger hit for the band. The album's title cut was a brilliant soulful ballad, while "Blisters" was a fine bluesy close for the album which, in spite of its lack of hit singles, became the band's third gold LP in succession.

Really great. Really Raw. It moves like a burning cigarette its so smooth. It sounds almost like the band is set up in your living room it has so much soul. It doesn't sound current, but a glass of wine at night and this record go together so well you may think you're hangin out in a Lounge in Philly in the 70's. If you like funk, soul or jazz, this album is a Must Have.

War's passion for social justice, lean funk and racial integration remains blessedly intact, and such cuts as 'Homeless Hero', 'East LA' and the classic title track suggest that their message is timeless and still vital. A fine AUDIOPHILE DOUBLE PIECE OF VINYL from funk's best visionairies.
