Description
The first record (Dec. 8, 1926) by RED NICHOLS AND HIS FIVE PENNIES was a winner, right out of the gate!
Red was an early and committed fan of HOAGY CARMICHAEL, of whose music Red made definitive waxings, starting with "WASHBOARD BLUES." (See Red and Hoagy's "Boneyard Shuffle" and "Riverboat Shuffle," also on this week's list).
The flip side, "THAT'S NO BARGAIN," is a total romp, and one of Nichols' best compositions. It includes Jimmy Dorsey's amazing set-piece chorus on "Tiger Rag," which came to have a life of its own.
This influential band consisted of: RED NICHOLS - cornet / JIMMY DORSEY - clarinet and alto sax / ARTHUR SCHUTT - piano / EDDIE LANG - guitar / VIC BERTON - drums and tuned tympani! One of the few times there actually WERE five musicians in the "Five Pennies"!
This original 1926 Vocalion 15498 is in clean EE- condition.

Shipping is done with expert care.
