Description
This LP was rush released after the landing on the Moon of Apollo 11 in July 1969. On the UK Philips label, 88463 DL, it contains much archive material from the early days of the US space programme as well as from the first landing itself. Some of the recordings from the lunar surface are not often heard elsewhere. Voices heard include the three Apollo 11 astronauts, also, Gus Grissom, Ed White, Tom Stafford Jim Lovell, Frank Borman and John Glenn. Also featured, John F Kennedy and NASA chief Thomas Paine, who looks ahead to the future of space travel in the 1970s. Total duration approximately 50 minutes. The gatefold sleeve has colour photos front and back, and inside contains much information about the Apollo 11 mission including pictures and diagrams.
Condition - well, this LP is 40 years old and is entirely spoken word, so there is no chance of any surface noise being masked! The playing surface looks pretty good but there is some surface noise, ranging from slight (most of side 1 ) to moderate over much of side 2. At no point does it make the disc unlistenable. There are a couple of tiny scratches each lasting just a couple of rotations but the record plays perfectly. The sleeve has survived quite well with just moderate wear from storage and a few small brown barely visible 'age spots'. If I grade the record as G+ overall and the sleeve as VG, I think that is fair and you won't be diasppointed. Please don't bid if you are expecting a record in pristine condition, but it is perfectly playable and you might like this as a collectors item from the time as opposed to something which has been produced more recently. I can remember buying this (aged 11) within two or three weeks of the landing having taken place.
