Kansas City-born saxophonist Ben Webster cut this classic session in 1954 with the Oscar Peterson Trio, later retitled King of the Tenors when Norman Granz launched Verve. It's long been a definitive showcase of Webster's warm, breathy tone and lyrical phrasing, presented here with the deluxe treatment. From the tender balladry of 'Tenderly' through to the Ellington standard 'Cottontail', his command of mood is unmistakable - switching from velvet smoothness to full-bodied swing. Benny Carter and Harry "Sweets" Edison appear on select cuts, adding bright counterpoint to Webster's languid lines, while Peterson's trio provide impeccable support throughout. For newcomers, it's an ideal entry point into Webster's artistry; for seasoned collectors, this reissue captures one of jazz's great tenor voices at his peak.
