WEST COAST POP ART EXPERIMENTAL BAND – Vol III: A Child’s Guide To Good And Evil ORIG Reprise LP // RSLP 6298 (UK, Stereo, 1968)

Happy to present this rare UK 1st pressing of this most curious and mysterious US psych LP.  It’s the tri-colour ‘steamboat’ Reprise label with UK flip-back sleeve – much harder to find than its US counterpart.  As with many American underground acts of the era, one LP was all that was released here in the UK, and it sold zilch.  Over time though, it has gained a reputation as a left-field, sometimes dark work, a reputation enhanced by Jack White’s Dead Weather covering ‘A Child Of A Few Hours Is Burning To Death’.

The front-laminated, tri-flipback sleeve has survived well.  These are the signs of age away from true Mint: 3 small handling creases and some edge wrinkling to the front laminate; slight corner dent to the front bottom right; touching in to the right flip; and a soft corner crease to the rear bottom right; little bit of wear to the opening corners; ‘D 769’ written to the top rear left (in the foliage of the bush in the picture, so not easily visible).  Overall tho’ it’s a pretty good example – all these are not severe and there’s no splits (edges and spine are still very sharp), still a better than average shine to the laminate and there’s no tears, bends, dirt or stickers.  I’ll say EX- (Excellent Minus) – many would see that as a minimum.

The late 60s tri-colour Reprise labels are fine – no writing, grubbiness or other damage.  Light to moderate spindle trails to the centre.  The labels have the CORRECT track listing for each side (as opposed to the sleeve which wrongly lists the track order).

The sharp, medium weight vinyl also grades EX- (Excellent Minus).  Very good shine and lies absolutely flat on the deck.  Some light and isolated marks, not numerous and mainly soft.  There’s a tiny scratch right at the beginning of ‘Watch Yourself’ (S1/T1) which does sound.  NO real scuffing, mainly a few fine hairlines.  NO embedded dirt or dulling of the surface.  A well above average disc.

IT HAS BEEN CAREFULLY LISTENED TO and play grade at least matches the visual one.  Apart from the aforementioned mark (which does cause around 2 dozen clicks), there’s nothing except for the occasional ultra-soft tick and slight background (never severe or even moderate).  So a great player which can be easily enjoyed. EX play.

This also includes the final track on Side 1: ‘Anniversary of World War III’ – 2 minutes plus of silence, which was left out on subsequent reissues.  A good sign of audio quality is that this silent track plays absolutely quietly...
