Signed by Jerome Robbins,
the creator, director & choreographer of West Side Story.
Condition: Excellent. Cover is clean and undamaged with great eye appeal, though there is a very small area of remnant adhesive upper right. Jerome Robbins autograph is nice and dark but "Robbins" is smudged as shown. Record is in great condition, lightly played at worst, possibly never played. No spindle marks on label. Original inner sleeve is present and in near mint condition.
In 1947, Jerome Robbins envisioned a modern retelling of Romeo and Juliet set in the streets of New York City. In 1957, his vision became reality when the musical West Side Story opened on Broadway -- featuring not only his original concept under his direction, but also his ground-breaking Tony Award-winning choreography.
With an unforgettable score by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by the then virtually unknown Stephen Sondheim, and book by Arthur Laurents, West Side Story changed the face of musical theatre for ever.
West Side Story remains one of the greatest of all American shows and still excites audiences today whenever it is presented -- it has proven to be timeless.
Offered here is a piece of West Side Story memorabilia that does not often come to market -- the show's original cast album signed by creator Jerome Robbins.
I acquired it recently along with other records from the collection of Martha Greenhouse (1921-2013) -- an American stage, film and television actress who was also an actors' union leader. Greenhouse was the AFTRA New York branch president for five terms, and served on the Screen Actors Guild's National Board from 1981-87.
Her collection included records such as a cast-signed "Damn Yankees" record (see below) and Broadway show albums such as "Don't Bother Me I Can't Cope" and "70 Girls 70" that were personally inscribed to her.
Although the West Side Story album I am offering here is not inscribed to her or marked to identify it as being from her collection, I guarantee it is an authentic Jerome Robbins signed piece.
Jerome Robbins (1918-1998) was one of the first great American-born ballet masters and also a major Broadway and film choreographer. He won Tony Awards for Best Choreography in 1948 (High Button Shoes), 1958 (West Side Story) and 1965 (Fiddler on the Roof) and in 1989 for directing Jerome Robbins' Broadway. He won the 1961 Academy Award for Best Director for West Side Story and an Honorary 1961 Academy Award for his choreography of the film.
