Description
DAN W. QUINN (1860 - 1938) was a pioneer recording artist, whose career started with the business in the 1890s, and continued up through World War I. He sang lusty comic songs and ragtime, and was a hit with record buyers from the very start. He's accompanied by the redoubtable (Berliner and Victor) house pianist, C.H.H. Booth.
This 1903 record, "WHISTLING MIKE," is a comic song about an Irishman, who though unable to sing, can whistle like the deuce (amply demonstrated by Mr. Quinn). So, even though this Irishman falls ninety feet from a ladder, breaking his neck, he whistles through to the end, wryly commenting, "Well, I was headed this way, anyhoo!" This song is closely akin to "Tim Finnegan's Wake," an even older comic song about a hapless Irish hod carrier, who also falls, breaks his head and dies - but not really. 'Twas a tough business in thim days!
This original 1903 "Grand Prize" Victor 1988, sporting the brand-new "Trademark" label, is in unbelievably fine E condition. That's EXCELLENT. No wear, no scratches. Couple of rubs. It's simply amazing that a record of this vintage could exist in such pristine shape. The seventy-five bucks I ask is out of respect for its improbable survival. It's a MUCH cleaner copy than the one currently up on the DAHR website!
