Escape is Whodini's second studio album. The band formed in 1982 in Brooklyn and consisted of vocalist and main lyricist Jalil Hutchins, co-vocalist John Fletcher and turntable artist DJ Drew Carter. This LP was originally intended to be more rock in sound but instead has a predominantly synthesizer-based backing sound with rhythm and blues influences throughout. It was a critical success upon release and was the first hip-hop album to chart within the U.S. top 40. Funk, swing, new jack and r&b all play their part in its sonic make up and help make it a richly rewarding listen.
