Description
WICKEDY WAK featuring Rick Springfield on vocals and guitar
Side One Billie's Bikie Boys written by Johnny Young and Russell Morris
Side Two Chitty Chitty Bang Bang written by R. Sherman and R.B Sherman
PRODUCED BY IAN "MOLLY" MELDRUM - August 1969
Side one of this single is a knockout. Rick Springfield plays and guitar and sings, as far as I can determine from what little information there is on this recording the rest of the band included Paul Shannon, Ray Wright, and Danny Finley from MPD Ltd. The song "Billie's Bikie Boys" was written by Johnny Young and Russell Morris and the production was done by Molly Meldrum. The production is great and in some parts is reminiscent of Russell Morris's "Real Thing" which was released earlier, in May of 1969. Rick Springfield's guitar is full on and I can't understand why this single did not make a bigger impact at the time. It could be because of the song on side two; "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" which is not very inspiring and a total contrast to the style of the A side. In the month following this recording Rick Springfield replaced Roger Hicks as the lead guitarist for Zoot and the rest is history. (There is an audio clip of "Billie's Bikie Boys" on you tube, type in "Wickedy Wak- Billie's Bikie Boys-you tube" and you can hear for yourself.) The vinyl on both sides is clean and still shiny, there are some paper scuffs and hairline scratches but no deep scratches, skips or jumps. Both sides play LOUD and clear, there is some very low level surface noise on the run in tracks not heard when the music starts. Both labels are clean, no writing or stickers, but there is a mark on side one, just above the title, and another one on side two, just below the group name, which look as though a label has been removed(see photos 3 & 4). I have graded the record as G++ because of the labels, sound wise it plays as VG. The cover is a Festival company sleeve it has some creasing and there is a small tear in the center hole on the back and the opening is a bit tattered. There is also some staining on the back, but there are no tears or splits in the sides.(G+ see photos 5 & 6). I will provide a new clean white cover in addition to the original cover. This is the only copy of this record that I have ever seen in all my years of record collecting. There are only six listings for it on popsike (you have to search for it under Rick Springfield), it doesn't come up very often, it's a real gem.
