How is it that a label like Bobbin Records, which specialized in St. Louis area R&B, managed to spin out three or four killer rockabilly 45s, all within the span of a year ? By a wide margin, this is the best of them. Heck, it might be the best rockabilly 45 to ever come out of St. Louis.

"Wigwam Willie" first appeared in the summer of 1959 and it's pretty clear that this is a record boldly inspired by Jerry Lee Lewis. But where Lewis' piano is clear and precise, and throbbing girl-tool of craftsmanship, on this Carl Phillips 45 it's a clanking-rattling monster that sounds as if one chorus too many may send it into splinters on the floor. The punishment it's taking under Carl's hands is unrelenting (at least for 2:48) and then it's time to spin it up again.

It seems that Carl cut only this one record for Bobbin in June of 1959, then re-appeared on K-Ark for another pair in 1960. They were pretty good, but none can compare to this wild romp. It's flipped with "Walkin' Blues" but I'll guess you'll never make it over to that side of this incredible item.
