FUNNYSAD MUSIC Lp by THE WILSON MALONE VOICEBAND arrangements by WIL MALONE supervision by MONTY BABSON. Original UK stereo pressing on the textured MORGAN label (MR112P), from 1968. Debut release by the cult UK arranger and singer Wil Malone (ex Bob Storm Group / Orange Bicycle / Motherlight etc) who was the in-house producer and arranger at Monty Babson's Morgan label studios. A quintessentially English and experimental strain of sunshine pop psychedelia featuring vocal harmony overdubs by Malone / sublime string orchestrations and baroque psych rhythms played by session musicians rumoured to include members of Orange Bicycle. The overall mood is a mixture of trippy melancholy and groovier arrangements with bursts of colour and eccentric touches. Malone's soft scat vocals and arranging skills rival Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys (who is covered on this session :) plus the Beatles writing dream team of Lennon & McCartney / Carol King et al. Every track is superb with shades of the Andrew Oldham Orchestra with maverick jazz flourishes and a few crude sound FX. A mini masterpiece and bewitching example of London's sophisticated hippie cum underground sound. We have recorded several themes for our soundclip including the whispering beauty and tuned latin congas of A NICE DAY FOR MONKS / the oddball, Morricone-esque pop beat delirium of SADIE BABY and other important themes like CHOOSY BEGGAR (the opening track on our soundclip) / FARMER'S DAUGHTER / GOING BACK / TORTILLA FATS / LOONIN and PINK. Malone later went on to record his 1970 Fontana label project featuring more unique music housed in an insane sleeve showing him in the New Forest dressed in a weird jumpsuit with creepy acid face paint et al. Inspired choice of artwork for the Funnysad Music session too. If you can imagine the Mike Sammes Singers on acid, then this item will slay you. Rare Lp!!! Our record grading: SEALED / M- / VG++ / VG+ / VG
Vinyl is in shiny, strong VG++ condition overall with a few hairlines / faint scuffs. Light surface noises. A few soft pops / soft ticks in places (as you can hear on our soundclip). Superb production sound. A couple of faint stains to label. The laminated sleeve is in strong VG+ condition overall, regardless of ring creasing and bending from storage. Some ring wear marks / a few mini areas of laminate lifting / a few crease lines and a touch of laminate chipping down the spine side edge. Light corner wear in places and ding to bottom left spine side corner. Back sleeve is also surprisingly clean but does have a couple of mini scratches to the card. Camera flash glare to sleeve and label photo. Rare Lp!!!
