Description
Here's a very rare (and great) LP from WILLIAM STRICKLAND titled AN ELECTRONIC VISIT TO THE ZOO/SOUND HYPNOSIS. This is an original pressing released on the Spectrum label, SR-118, in 1979.
Beginning of notes on the back cover written by William Strickland read: "These little Zoo pieces are essentially improvisations made while investigating the many challenges offered by a Moog synthesizer. No attempt was made to imitate - the sounds suggested the titles, which are purely fanciful. In Sound Hypnosis an attempt is made to create a larger canvas using the primitive device of repetition. Again, the titles followed upon the improvisations.
The manner of improvisation is as follows: recording on a four-channel tape recorder and playing on an electronic organ, piano and synthesizer.
Channel 1: A click track, of previously planned length, is laid down (so many measures, so many beats to the measure).
Channel II: The first musical idea is improvised against the click track.
Channel III: A second improvisation is recorded, being a musical reaction to the playback of channel II.
Channel IV: A third improvisation is again a reaction to the playback of channels II and III.
With these three musical strands as basic material one is ready to edit. this approach came as a reaction to what might be called "equipment music" or what one colleague calls "equipmentship" --e.g. play the material on your tape recorder twice as fast, or twice as slow, or backwards, etc. -- always resulting, to these ears at least, in music sounding as though it was being played twice as fast, slow or backwards. Nor did various other such devices supposed to create new sounds convince. After a certain time working in an electronic studio one learns to identify most of these procedures as indeed being "equipmentship". Useful, perhaps, in experimenting with sound, but not in creating music."
