You are bidding for a CLASSIC US 50'S JAZZ /R&B 78 RPM single by WILLIE (THE LION ) SMITH called WILLIE'S BLUES backed with STOP IT JOE issued on the BLUE CIRCLE record label in the US in 1953, cat number BCR 501 (BLUE ANDSILVER LABEL). The record is in excellent condition with excellent labels. The record has little wear with no slight surface scuffs and nosurface scratches and plays with no jumps and clicks and a minimum of surface noise. CLASSIC US PIANO BLUES /JIVE/ JAZZ from WILLIE (THE LION) SMITH with two ROCKING SOULFUL BLUES tracks. "The Lion", was one of the masters of the piano stridestyle, usually grouped with JAMES J JOHNSON and FATS WALLER as the three greatest practitioners of the genre from its Golden Age. He served in the army in Europe during the 1st world war, The legend is that his nickname "The Lion" came from his bravery while serving as a heavy artillery gunner.. He returned to working in Harlem clubs and in rent parties, where Smith and his contemporaries James P. Johnson and Fats Waller developed a new, more sophisticated piano style later called STRIDE also after the war, where he worked for decades, often as a soloist, sometimes in bands a. Although working in relative obscurity, he was a "musician's musician", influencing countless others including Duke Ellington, George Gershwin, and Artie Shaw.
