The Sound of Wilson Pickett was one of the three albums Atlantic issued by the Wicked One in 1967. Produced by Jerry Wexler (who got co-writes on a couple of tracks), it featured great session players like Chips Moman and Spooner Oldham, to name just two. Looking at the track list, it looks like a slew of hits. But it wasn't. In fact, it was two sides packed with singles. While it contains his absolutely classic, wailing read of "Funky Broadway," it also features both parts of "I Found a Love" (renamed "I Found a True Love" for the 1968 album The Midnight Mover), the Oldham and Dan Penn suggestive classic "I Need a Lot of Loving Everyday." Pickett's reading of the song with a killer female backing chorus smolders with nocturnal nether-hipped fire. Pickett's version of Rudy Clark's swaggering "You Can't Stand Alone" is a burning throw-down with awesome guitar and horn charts and a killer little Farfisa break in the middle. He also sings the deep Memphis blues on "Something Within Me." The set closes with one of his finest performances, his signature reading of "Love Is a Beautiful Thing." Arguably, The Sound of Wilson Pickett may be his finest album performance of the entire decade.

Wilson Picket could not sing a ballad or slow-tempo number if his life depended on it, but when it came to up- and mid-tempo songs and rowdy, beat-strong, dancing songs, he was the King of the Hill. Nothing - and nobody - could touch his primacy. In terms of sheer funkiness, his royal Wickedness was second to none for a brief moment in time, and this rare 1966 album is a wonderful case in point. This, his fourth Atlantic album, is a masterpiece of robust Rhythm & Blues, Soul and ruff'n'tuff funkiness. It includes some of the greatest hits of his career, such as 'Funky Broadway', 'I found a love, parts 1&2' and 'Soul Dance # 3'. For our money, this is by far Wilson Pickett's single greatest album Plus, check out the dramatic cover - one of the finest   60's covers relying on the visually captivating power and impact of the color contrast and 'chiarroscurro'. (b)          The record is believed to come in its original stock inner sleeve.

(c)           The record is  apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more  preferable to its stereo counterpart. We think that the mix is more natural, humane, "organic" and that the mixes are somewhat different than on the stereo version. We estimate that stereo copies of this album outnumber mono pressings by a ratio of at least 8:1.

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

-        Cover has a small cutout saw-mark (an indent about 3-5 mm long ) on one of its seams.

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2   (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY) .

-         Cover has one corner slightly dinged (nothing significant)
