Brief Info: Pink Flag was Wire’s first album. Issued, somewhat surprisingly on the progressive Harvest label and all three of their albums are now quite sort after and collectable. Issued in the 1970s punk era, Wire defied any easy genre classification but certainly were not outright ‘punk’, although this debut has elements of. Abrasive and somewhat disjointed this album was impossible to ignore and was almost ‘alternative punk’. Mostly minimal and fast and including two superb ‘pop’ songs in ‘Ex-Lion Tamer’ and ‘Mannequin’, this non-charting album fully deserves its cult status and place within ‘All Time Greats’ lists, especially within the more ‘modern’ era. Brilliantly diverse and exciting, Wire were unique and many even now classify them as ‘progressive’ within their own unique style, for sure, it proved highly influential. It features 21 short full-on songs which is quite a number for a single album. This is a very fine early copy and it plays superbly with the cleanest sound I have yet heard, certainly one for fans and Harvest collectors alike.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: a single unlaminated format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England, uncredited. This copy includes the lyric inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Viewed normally, full on, this front looks clean and impressive with hardly any traces of creasing. Any rubbing little and light as seen more critically under angled light along with fine surface marks. A cover that seldom wears well, this certainly one of the better ones I have seen.

Cover Back: The back is lovely with few blemishes of note at all, minor dulling near the top and bottom edges under light.

Top Edge: Very straight and clean with no wear.

Bottom Edge: Largely the same, the odd tiny friction rub trace on this storage edge.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with little wear or thickening. Small burr traces seen viewed end-on. Record entered on this edge that has no trimming or enhancements.

Spine and Text: A fantastic spine that looks practically as-made. Solid, straight, with minimal compression, all text is perfect and unworn, also well centred on a narrow depth as seen.

Corners: Any tip rubbing small and light, being white, little registers. Very fine to excellent shape retained without knocks, any hint of dinks tiny with just the odd tiny tip crease.

Cover Summary: A very fine example of this fairly scarce 1970’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. Just enough to gently remind of age but it will please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): A card unlined lyric inner with round corners and barely any wear or grubbiness. The recessed top opening has no wear, thickening or damage. All edges unsplit with no repairs, this inner will seldom be found better.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better. An impressive visual copy that is very clean, with equally fine shine and fairly solidly pressed. These types usually purchased by younger music fans of the time, and often not treated with the care they merited. A pressing line following the groove on side one in manufacture has no sound, the record plays superbly. A small surface mark near the rim of side two does nothing and not a great deal else. This record will prove difficult to find significantly better. It should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This somewhat groundbreaking and influential record plays even above its high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound and no tracking issues*. Any surface sounds are minimal and light, the odd sporadic tick near impossible to avoid totally – Harvest not always being pristine pressings as many Pink Floyd lovers will known. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played little and has been generally well stored and carefully handled. Nothing of note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this impressive record – I have been a fan of Wire almost since this album was first issued. This copy could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
