The Woolies

Basic Rock

Very Rare original Private US LP released on Spirit Records in 1972. 1st US pressing in a Gatefold sleeve.

Lansing, Michigan's Woolies weren't as bracing or confrontational as contemporaries like MC5 or the Stooges (or even the Rationals, for that matter), but they got a lot of mileage out of their recurring gig as Chuck Berry's backing band, and this 1970 self-released debut has its moments. Their regional hit version of "Who Do You Love" is a rollicking, energetic take on the Bo Diddley chestnut, and it opens the set. Even if these nice young white boys aren't entirely convincing as bad-asses who wear cobra snakes as neckties, their popped-out arrangement is teenage bubblegum R&B with a professional sheen and just enough grit under the surface. The rest of Basic Rock doesn't quite live up to its title, unfortunately, leaning hard on breezy Lovin' Spoonful-style jug grooves and derivative songwriting (although it could be argued that "Bye Bye Johnny" is more tribute than rip-off, the result is weak nonetheless). "Hear the Music" is the best original tune of the batch; its gospel-flavored harmony intro leads to a simple but effective riff that probably killed live and could have used a little more energy in the studio. The Woolies cap it all off with an extended live version of "Wish You Would" which proves the band could tear it up when facing a demanding Detroit rock audience. Guitarist Jeff Baldori stretches out on raw, earthy solos far more visceral than anything that precedes, and brother Bob Baldori honks some effective mouth harp riffs. Do they need six full minutes to make their point? Of course not, but in an era of indulgence, The Woolies were hardly the worst offenders. Their wholesome garage rock won't appeal to anyone with a Crypt Records mindset, but Basic Rock should charm the pop-oriented collector.
