BLACK GOSPEL TIDBITs: Early quartets sang acappella because they couldn't afford instruments. By the time they could afford instruments, they had learned to make their voices sound like instruments; thus, no instruments ever needed, or desired.
--Most local southern communities had good quartets; only a few got recorded. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the pioneering companies that recorded those we hear today. We further own a debt to black gospel preservationists wo are now buying, archiving and preserving this artform. Thanks to you, future generations will hear this music. Keep up the good work, and a big THANK YOU! You know who you are .
Underground Black Gospel - What does it mean? As told to me by locals, when good gospel groups couldn't get fair recording contracts, they went 'underground' and formed their own labels and sold their records to church members, friends and acquaintances. These are some of the best black gospel recordings and the hardest to find - as previously stated, "they are underground" and most remain as such. Good luck finding them.
