Description
A wonderful piece of World War II and music memorabilia. This four record set of 45 rpm discs are the eight songs that Marlene Dietrich recorded for the U.S. Office of Strategic Services (pre-cursor to the CIA) for use as a propaganda tool to entice German soldiers and people to tune in to Radio America and soften the ending of the war. Dietrich sings in German and songs reflecting home and missed loved ones were selected and recorded with an Orchestra directed by Jimmy Carroll. The songs are: Lilli Marlene, Mean to Me, Annie Doesn't Live Here Anymore, The Surrey With The Fringe On Top, Time on My Hands, Taking a Chance On Love, Miss Otis Regrets, and I Couldn't Sleep a Wink Last Night.
The records are in fabulous shape and look like they have never been played. They are still in the original box, which shows minor scuffing and shelf wear except along the paper on the spine and front edges which has some chipping and paper loss. The remarkable story of this secret OSS program is on the back of the box and is fully intact and carries a government document number of G 4-17. Beautiful, vibrant color on the box with an amazing black and white photo of Marlene in World War II army fatigues and cap.
