Wagnerians are a unique population, highly opinionated, and yet there's one thing they agree upon for the most part, and that is that Furtwangler caught live in 1950 in LA Scala is among the finest performances of Wagner ever. For many years, Furtwangler's Ring Cycle was represented by a slightly better recorded studio recording made in Rome three years later. However, the La Scala orchestra is superior and more importantly, Furtwangler in live performance simply possessed a magical synergy, an overarching view of the work, that was never captured in the studio. Here's the complete set on 11 long playing albums in Near Mint Condition or better. This is essential listening and belongs in the library of any serious Wagnerian.
