For sale from the private collection of John Culshaw OBE ‘s Estate. SXL 2074-5 UK ED1

John Culshaw OBE (28 May 1924 – 27 April 1980) pioneering English classical record producer and Pioneer of Stereo recording for Decca Records UK. With Culshaw at the helm of Decca he concentrated on the emerging stereophonic recording technology, and stereo opera in particular as manager of the company's classical recording division, a position of great influence in the classical music world.

The Gramophone obituary wrote of him in 1980: "To meet John Culshaw for the first time, quiet, charming, sharp-eyed but with no signs of aggressiveness about him, was to marvel that here was one of the two great dictators of recording art. If Walter Legge in a flash had one registering extrovert forcefulness in the very picture of a dictator, John Culshaw's comparable dominance was something to appreciate over a longer span. … [H]e transformed the whole concept of recording. .

Among the honours given to Culshaw, The Times listed "eight Grands Prix des Disques, numerous Grammys and in 1966 an OBE", and the Vienna Philharmonic's Nicolai Medal in 1959 and its Schalk Medal in 1967. .

Following Mr. Culshaws sad passing his personal HiFI equipment and vinyl record collection was dutifully storred by his family. We were recently contacted by Johns Nephew and God Son Alistair regarding Mr. Culshaws Hifi equipment which had remained unused since his passing. Having inspected the hifi equipment (Including a bespoke Decca tonearm and some fascinating speakers from his office at Decca) we were able to make an arrangement to purchase both the HiFI and the records. An Important note – These records belonged to John Culshaw, they are of historical significance and we hope they find the right collector. You may further note the cover anomaly, the stickered Decca logo is from the Mono set however the cloth bound spine clearly states STEREO. In short Mr. Culshaw was given this box set prior to the Stereo front slick being printed making this example rarer still!!!

Playing surfaces

The flat playing surfaces of both records are pristine under bright magnified light with a full and complete luster. The records are well centered. The 1st press WB/g labels show no signs of use to the spindle holes. Light paper chaffing only. No feelanble or audible marks. This is an extremely fine example from the private collection of John Culshaw we grade it without reservation as Excellent plus (EX+) condition

BOX

The front slick displays well, as noted above this is an anomaly as the pasted slick is from the MONO issue with the cloth bound spine text reading STEREO. All text is clear and true, No splits to seams or corners. No writing, stamps or stickers. = Excellent (EX) Condition

libretto

The libretto is in very presentable condition with minimal foxing only, all seams, and edges are sharp and true. Please see images for a clear sense of condition = Excellent Plus (EX+)
