Description

Walt Disney's " SONG OF THE SOUTH " - The RARE ORIGINAL 1956 ALBUM - This is a unique entry in the history of the Disney Recording Division.  It was among the first genuine soundtracks from their motion pictures, as produced and 'created' by CAMARATA. He chose not to include just the songs, but also listened carefully to see which parts of the musical score would complement those songs. At that time, it was unusual to have both score and song in the same record.   Because of this, the marketing people at Disney, chose to release and promote the first wave of these LP's as adult soundtracks...that is, to be included in the regular bins at stores as opposed to 'Kids Records'. "They had vibrant cover graphics and colours, substantial cardboard covers and excellent vinyl pressings."   The WDL albums are most collectible series of the Disney records! These were quality produced albums . However, they did not sell well when aimed for the adult market, and the company would later revert to marketing to their prime demographic with the switch to BEUNA VISTA .     "SONG OF THE SOUTH" is the first from the series, Number WDL-4001. It was released in 1956.  In Canada SPARTON Records had the rights to the Disney Product at that time, and were also considered one of the best pressing plants in the country in the 1950's. This one is in ALMOST MINT condition. The cover has been printed in the U.S. and sent to SPARTON in Canada, where they name SPARTON was overprinted at the top right corner of the front cover.  This LP has been valued as high as $300.00 by "The Golden Age of Walt Disney Records', and there is also more background material about the LP and the series in "MOUSE TRACKS", the story of Walt Disney Records ( a fascinating read for anyone interested in recorded Disney music.)   "SONG OF THE SOUTH" was scored (and conducted) by DANIELE AMFITHEATROF and PAUL J. SMITH. Vocal Arrangements by KEN DARBY. The voices are those of : JAMES BASKETT- HATTIE McDANIEL - JOHNNY LEE & NICODEMUS STEWART and THE HALL JOHNSON CHOIR. The song 'ZIP A DEE DOO DAH' won an Academy Award for best song from a motion picture in 1946.    The songs are by COSLOW-JOHNSON-LANGE-HEATH-DANIEL-GILBERT-WRUBEL-DARBY-CARLING-MACGIMSEY.   Today, this film is shelved for political in-correctness and the Disney people have shown no sign of changing their mind, leaving us without a soundtrack or dvd.     SIDE ONE:   SONG OF THE SOUTH UNCLE REMUS SAID ZIP-A-DEE-DOO-DAH GINNY AND JOHNNY WHO WANTS TO LIVE LIKE THAT?
