The Dorsey brothers, Tommy and Jimmy, were influential American jazz musicians and bandleaders who played pivotal roles in the development of the big band and swing eras.
**Tommy Dorsey** (1905-1956) was a trombonist known for his smooth tone and technical skill. He led the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, which produced numerous hits such as "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You," "Marie," and "Song of India." His band featured notable musicians, including Frank Sinatra, and was renowned for its polished, danceable sound.
**Jimmy Dorsey** (1904-1957) was a saxophonist and clarinetist celebrated for his virtuosity and versatility. He led the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, known for hits like "Amapola," "Tangerine," and "So Rare." Jimmy's band was also highly successful, contributing to the popularity of swing music.
The brothers initially played together in the Dorsey Brothers Orchestra but parted ways in 1935 due to personal and professional differences. Despite their split, both achieved significant success with their respective bands. They reunited in the mid-1950s, co-leading the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra until Tommy's death in 1956, after which Jimmy continued to lead the band until his own death the following year. Their contributions to jazz and swing music left a lasting legacy in American music history.
