Description

?? - Warrior  / Mr Dreadlock (Rainbow Sound RSL133) - 12" - 197X

Decent original pressing of this ultra-rare and utterly obscure late-'70s K Henriques-produced Rainbow Sound 12" featuring the back-to-back heavyweight roots killers Warrior and Mr Dreadlock, both of which segue into their tuff dubs. Unfortunately there are no artist credits on the label, though both tracks were written by Samuel Cooke. A search on Google turned up NO information about this particular release, though it appears that the label was active during the late '70s in Nottingham, England, releasing private pressings as diverse as cabaret groups, brass bands, choirs, heavy metal, punk and, with this previously unchronicled release, reggae.  The vinyl retains a decent sheen with light and some lightish surface marks, fine, light hairlines and about a dozen more noticeable, lightish-to-moderate scratches - nothing too serious - see descriptions below. Both sides play through without jumping or sticking, and the HEAVY vibes come through loud and clear - check-out the clips.

Given that so few copies of this record were pressed in the first place, it is probable that only a handful remain today - it may well even be unique, especially taking into account the total lack of any reference to it on the internet. This is one for the roots aficionados, for sure.

"Rainbow Sound Studios, of Nottingham, was a Custom Recording operation - a place which recorded and pressed limited quantities of records for artists, such as Cabaret and Club performers, who wanted something to sell to the people who came to their performances. Rainbow appears to have been active c1978 to c1980 - at some point it extended its name to Rainbow Sound. Unsurprisingly, Rainbow releases, of which there were at least fifty-two, are extremely rare. RSL-131 was the punk single Bingo by The Escorts, a copy of which recently sold for £220, RSL-132 was the rock album Let Battle Commence by Warrior, which regularly commands a price in excess of £100, while RSL-152 was Chorale & Rockout For Brass Band & Rock Group by the Harworth Colliery & Welfare Band !!

A-side: The two most prominent scratches cause clicks ranging from prominent down to very small during much of the vocal cut. Otherwise there is only a tiny amount of intermittent background surface noise - hardly audible in fact - with tiny and very small pops and clicks plus some more prominent ones caused by a couple of smaller scratches. Grade - VG- improving to VG/VG+ (please check-out the clip to hear the worst of the clicks)

B-side: There are around eight noticeable scratches, though they are mostly quite light. A couple extend over much of the track causing clicks ranging from moderate to tiny, most being small / smallish. Otherwise there is only a tiny amount of intermittent background surface noise - hardly audible in fact - with tiny and very small pops and clicks plus some more prominent ones caused by the smaller scratches. Grade - VG-/VG improving to VG/VG+ (again, please check-out the clip)

Labels: Both labels are near pristine (see scan).
