Limited Edition Double LP, Pure Analog Vacuum-Tube Recording
Listing Description:
A landmark audiophile recording from Water Lily Acoustics — this Limited Edition Double LP was issued to commemorate the 70th birthday of the legendary sarod maestro Padmavibhushan Dr. Ali Akbar Khan, joined by Sri Swapan Chaudhuri on tabla, with James Pomerantz and David Trasoff on tanpura. Recorded July 1–2, 1992 at Christ the King Chapel, St. Anthony’s Seminary, Santa Barbara, CA, and produced by Kavichandran Alexander, this is a pure analog recording made exclusively with custom-built triode vacuum-tube electronics — microphones, mic pre-amp, and one-inch two-track recorder all custom-designed by Tim de Paravicini of EAR, run at 15 ips using the classic Blumlein stereo miking technique. No noise reduction, equalization, compression, or limiting of any kind was used. Mastered by de Paravicini himself in London on a custom vacuum-tube cutting system; plated and pressed at Record Technology Inc., Camarillo, CA. Funded in part by a grant from The Absolute Sound’s Fund for Recorded Music — this title is widely regarded among audiophiles as one of the finest-sounding LPs ever produced.
Rag Alam Bhairav is dedicated to Padmavibhushan Dr. Allauddin Khan Sahib and Begum Madina; Rag Durga is dedicated to Ma Durga. The album carries a facsimile signed inscription from Ali Akbar Khan and is dedicated to Sharada Ma of Maihar.
