~~~Water is one of the most underrated Dutch pop bands. This band was formed in 1974 by former Sandy Coast keyboardist Ron Westerbeek with André Bleeker (guitar), John Lagrand (harmonica, ex-Livin’ Blues), Pieter Voogt (drums, ex-Ekseption and Continental Uptight Band), Jan van Dijk (flute), Boris Farberow (bass) and Debbie Wokaty (vocals).
They released two albums only of which the second “ Damburst” was produced by ex-Zombies Chris White.
This first album from 1975 was produced by Piet Souer. This band sounded very funky for a Dutch band in 1975. They mixed their funk with a tropical sound and light symphonic rock influences.
The opener, “ Holiday (Hideaway)” was their single which never got further then the bottom of the charts. Strange, because this is an irresistible sunny song with male/female vocals and a varied, complex structure.
“ After The Ball” is an elegant symphonic rock song with a heavy funk tic, with the harmonica and flute acting as the horn section. This song has a very deep groove.
The funk is also present in one of the highlights of this album, “ All Around Your Tumble”, with the piercing harmonica., a grooving clavinet and deep bass.
Another swinging funk track is “ Follow Me”. “ You’re Older Now” is a keyboard driven ballad with a bluesy sound. Another ballad is “ The Second Day” with sounds like Earth & Fire but then with a lot of folk influences. It is incomprehensible that this band didn’t get any more recognition in the 70’s. This funky mix of Earth & Fire, Galaxy-Lin and Carmen absolutely deserves a higher position in the Dutch pop history !! Recommended album !!
