Welcome to the Beautiful South vinyl original pressing with banned outer sleeve
The debut album Welcome to the Beautiful South (1989) became notable not just for its music but for its banned original record sleeve. The controversy centred on two Jan Saudek photographs used on the cover: A woman with a gun in her mouth & A man smoking
Major UK retailer Woolworths refused to stock the album, claiming the images might encourage impressionable young fans to imitate the behaviour depicted. As a result, the band and label issued an alternative, sanitised cover featuring a stuffed toy rabbit and teddy bear. A further Canadian edition removed the woman-with-gun image entirely.
If you're browsing vinyl listings today, this explains why you’ll see multiple different sleeves for the same 1989 LP — the original is more collectible, while the later versions were created to satisfy retailer demands.
