Minimalist Multiple Art and Rock Music "The Beatles" by The Beatles (usually called "The White Album") cover designed by Richard Hamilton numbered This classic album has a cover conceived as a multiple art object by Richard Hamilton. It is as blank and featureless as he could make it without losing its functionality as a marketing tool altogether. Each exemplar was numbered serially like an exclusive fine art product. As an industrial product, each exemplar issued was identical to every other one apart from the serial numbers; the artist foresaw that the covers would come to differ from each other due to changes in the materials (e.g. oxidisation and acidification), grime, wear, annotations and accidents. The future condition was considered part of the design. That would raise little comment today but in 1968 was "far out" avant garde. This is why collectors of the "White Album" aren't obsessed with condition, seeking to display copies with varying histories. The gatefold cover bears the codes of both the stereo and mono versions indicating that it was used indifferently for both. The records in this auction are mono. It might be that the four sided album was intended to show the four distinct personalities and interests of the individual band members as the curious mixture of themes and moods seems to foreshadow the disintegration of The Beatles; dark political themes sit ill with frothy frolics. The poster (also, I think by Hamilton) has the lyrics on one side. It is repaired with cellulose tape. I am only able to show you a couple of details of it. The albums play but are not in good condition.
