Description
I was a student at the University of Leeds in 1970 and attended the concert. I bought this copy of the LP on sale in the University Union, 13 May 1970; date stamped on the front cover and inside the album. It wasn't released until 23 May 1970 in the UK.
There's quite a debate about whether the original album was released with red or black or blue lettering on the sleeve. Thus Ant Cummings in the Record Collector states:
"The article about The Who Live At Leeds (RC377) correctly states that the 1st issue sleeve was issued in either black, red or blue. However all colour variations for this sleeve had black printing details on the inside of the sleeve. I have collected Who records for 30 years and the red front/black inside print is by far the hardest to find. Black and blue are fairly common in this variation. Also genuine A1/A1 first pressings are pressed on much thicker vinyl, with a darker blue print used for the label text. Soon after release Polydor/ Track changed the sleeve to have the inside print colour match whatever was used on the outside. A1/A1 matrix stamps were again used for this issue, however this is a second pressing with thinner vinyl and a tur-quise colour used for the label text. I also have black and red first variations with the grease-proof bag... I just feel this ‘black print used on the very first records’ is something again cooked up by eBay sellers to gain higher prices with incorrect information."
Well I can't say anything on that except the LP I bought at the Student Union in May 1970 had red lettering on the outside of the album and black within.
The 50th anniversary of the Live at Leeds concert is coming up in just over 18 months so I hope this special collector's album goes to a good home.
