Crazy For My Baby b/w Walking The Blues
Pye International 7N.25270, 1964.
It is probably true to say that the original UK 1956 release of these two tracks on a single, is one of the most sought after blues records ever released in the UK. Copies of that original issue on London Records HL-U-8297 are vanishingly rare and command prices of many hundreds of pounds.
On that London label issue and on its original 1955 US release on Checker, Walking The Blues was the A-side but for some reason, when Pye reissued it on this record in 1964, they reversed the order. Surprising really, since although Crazy For My Baby is an excellent upbeat track, it is the slow, lazy Walking The Blues that is truly a fabulous recording. It is interesting that although Willie Dixon, as a writer, wrote some of the most enduring blues of the twentieth century for legendary Chicago performers like Muddy Waters, Little Walter and Howlin’ Wolf, he did not write Walking The Blues. Walking The Blues was actually written by Champion Jack Dupree and Teddy “Mr Bear” McRae.
This one is a much better than decent example. It does have some faint marks and lines to the playing surface but none of these marks can be heard on the record.. One “skate” line runs from the edge of the record to the run-in grooves but that is also inaudible on the record. The record plays very well indeed. As you can see, the labels are nice and clean. The record still has its original sleeve which is in OK condition, if a bit tatty.
Of course, this record was not a big seller by any means, so good examples are hard to find these days.
