THE DESOTOS : -------------------------------

THE DESOTOS In 1988 a group of musicians performed their favorite tunes at the Sage Inn in tiny Springville, Utah. The pay was poor, and the crowd was meager, but the music was classic, and the Desotos were born.

The idea for the Desotos came to Paul Sames, a television supervisor, while he was watching his collegues on the small screen. He noticed how warmly the american public seemed to be embracing vintage entertainment -- everything from “I Love Lucy” reruns on cable televisions, to Chuck Berry hits on the radio. He Saw an audience for the entertainment he loved best -- vintage Rock and Roll.

Paul’s basement became a practice studio. He son Craig, a drummer with experience in country, jazz and heavy metal bands, joined his dad and five other musicians who responded to Paul’s classified recruiting ads. One of those first respondents was Jan Alley, a bass-wielding mechanic who loved to play the Beatles. They also found Bob Hales, an MBA student, who had taught himself to play keyboards and was looking to make the move to a band on the way up. Helping the band on its ascent were three more musicians who lent a distinguishing edge to the Desotos’ sound. Boyd Ricks was teaching junior high school music and playing in various local bands when he auditioned for the  group, and guitar player Jon Ross was studying manufacturing technology in college when the Desotos gave him the nod. Rounding out the good time oldies charisma of the Desotos was another student with a rousing impersonation of Elvis. James Dean’s “King” rendition stole the hearts of Desotos audiences and won him the last spot in the band.

With Jan on bass, Craig on drums, Paul and Jon on guitar, Bob on keyboards, Boyd on sax, and James doing the “King”, the Desotos made the move from playing oldies at club gigs and local dances to creating their own music. They found their audience increasing.
