Wolfgang Dauner 1967 FREE ACTION Mani Neumeier Jean-Luc Ponty Eberhard Weber
Rare opportunity to acquire this Spanish MPS Records copy (JS-062) of The Wolfgang Dauner Septet's 1967 album FREE ACTION, featuring star bassist Eberhard Weber, future Guru Guru leader Mani Neumeier and French electric violin genius Jean-Luc Ponty, whose performance on this LP would lead to Frank Zappa's invitation for him to join the Mothers. The cover of this disc is very sound but exhibits much ring wear from the disc beneath and edge wear which blights the overall look of the item – there is even a tiny hole at the bottom of the cover. There is also evidence of a price sticker (see photo) and a single panel 2cms square on the rear cover has been blacked out with permanent marker.
Both sides have just been played and mostly sound excellent. On side one, the opening track 'Sketch Up & Downer' bore a couple of mild pops but was clean thereafter, as was the second track 'Disguise'. Unfortunately, on 'Free Action Shot', there is a point around 4 minutes from the end where the needle sticks. On side two, the enormous 'My Spanish Disguise' exhibits several minor pops at the very beginning, then cleans up nicely for the rest of the jam, as does the clean final epic 'Collage'.
