March 1940 session of recordings Woody Guthrie made in Washington, D.C., for and with Alan Lomax. The first recordings made of Woody Guthrie. A mix of traditional songs and some of Guthrie's best known songs, "So Long It's Been Good to Know You", "Talking Dust Bowl Blues" and "Do-Re-Me". Guthrie talks and reflects in between songs and gives insights and memories of Oklahoma, riding the trains, observations on life and America's great depression.
These were not intended to be commercial recordings and were first released in 1967; this Rounder Records edition was released in 1988. A great meeting between two men of and beyond their times – the audio on conversations can be poor at times but the feel of the pieces are relaxed and helpfully fuelled by ciggies and hooch throughout the proceedings! There is also a typo on the back of the box in the technical note write-up where the sound can sometimes be ‘OBSUCRED.’ A must for Guthrie and roots music fans everywhere; another important recording from the vision, dedication and commitment of the sonic history curator, Alan Lomax. Very good vinyl condition and covers in good shape - small wear and tear on outer box – see photos.
